Stan Surmacz made a smashing first impression on BKFC fans on Saturday.
Fans of Canadian gloved boxing aren’t surprised.
It wasn’t long ago that Surmacz was establishing himself as a top heavyweight prospect in “The Great White North.” His professional gloved boxing record is an impressive 12-1, with seven of his wins coming by KO.
The pandemic brought Surmacz’s in-ring momentum to a halt, and he put a pause on competing to build his business and get married.
Surmacz has wanted to try his hand at bare knuckle fighting since BKFC debuted, and on Saturday he got his wish. In his hometown of Edmonton, he notched a third-round KO over Reuben Roundstone in BKFC Prospect Series action at the sold-out River Cree Resort & Casino.
Despite sustaining a hand injury in the opening round, Surmacz had a blast in the Squared Circle. A boxing teacher and personal trainer by trade, Surmacz is excited to lose himself in the intricacies of bare knuckle fighting.
“I really enjoyed it – it was a lot of fun,” the 33-year-old heavyweight says.
“There’s a lot of things that I need to work on, like fighting in the clinch, which I’m not used to doing. I wanted to throw more of my left hand, but my thumb was messed up, so I was very limited at what I could do, and my opponent was in my face the whole night.
“But I actually really enjoyed it, and I could see myself going far with BKFC if they want me back.”
