The weight of a nation was on Jade Masson-Wong’s shoulders on Saturday.
Masson-Wong, the most dangerous female fighter in Canada, took to the Squared Circle to battle American Gabrielle Roman in the Main Event of BKFC’s hugely anticipated Canadian debut Saturday at River Cree Resort & Casino in Edmonton.
“It was an honor to be a part of this historic event, even more so to be in the Main Event,” the 31-year-old Quebec City, QC fighter says. “BKFC has big plans for Canada, so I knew there was a lot at stake. I knew that fans across Canada would be watching this event, so I knew I had to rise to the occasion.”
And that’s exactly what Masson-Wong did, needing just 60 seconds to roll through Roman. With the win, she improved to 3-1 in the Squared Circle.
“Gabrielle Roman is a great fighter, so I was prepared for five hard rounds of fighting. I saw in her eyes that she was hurt, so I really put it on her and didn’t let up,” she says.
“I would’ve liked to put on a longer show for the fans, but of course I’m very happy with the result.”
Masson-Wong has her sights set on BKFC World Women’s Flyweight Champion Christine “Misfit” Ferea, who’s widely regarded as the greatest female fighter to ever compete under the BKFC banner.
“When the time comes, it will be an honor to fight for the belt. I think Christine and I match up very well with each other. We’ve both got heavy hands, and we both put a lot of pressure on our opponents,” she says.
“It will be a hell of a fight.”
